UL Environment, a subsidiary of the product safety certification organization Underwriters Laboratories (UL), has acquired Air Quality Sciences (AQS) and its certifying body, the Greenguard Environmental Institute. Under the acquisition, Greenguard will retain its name, and its certification program names will remain unchanged as well.
One of the difficulties that building materials manufacturers and producers face is identifying the chemicals emitted. Manufacturers are under increasing pressure to produce more environmentally responsible products. Greenguard and AQS seek to provide third-party verification of indoor air quality claims necessary for the more stringent standards faced in the built environment.
