Volcanic Activity in Imperial Valley Possible According To Geologists

A pool of magma fifteen miles wide lies beneath four buttes located in the Imperial Valley near the south end of the Salton Sea. The USGS states that an eruption is possible. Although such an event would not likely reach the extent of Mount St. Helens or the Iceland event, Santa Ana wind conditions could bring ash clouds to the San Diego region.

Comments from the U.S. Geological Survey are sparking questions about a potential volcanic eruption in Imperial Valley that could bring clouds of ash to San Diego County.

“Most definitely… Volcanic activity is possible,” said geologist Pat Abbott.
